White, Ed. Now that was an amazing book! Better options out there I'm starting an EdD program and trying to get my ducks in a row NOW as far as the dissertation. This book was very disappointing. It's basically a glorified pep talk and is very dated. I returned my copy. There are better options out there. This book is just wonderfully empathic. A lot of reading materials for PhD students are full of tough love, but this particular author talks about difficult steps with a lot of grace, positive thinking, and a productive take on finishing things for the sake of regaining independence and charting your own path forward as an almost-doctor.

Lots of thoughts on how different people write and what works for them. There's a section on struggles with one's advisor. There's a section on hitting a wall while writing. Lots of ideas on starting and getting into the flow of writing.

This book really acknowledges that in order to become a PhD, one must first become a writer, and a writer very much alike to those who write actual books of non-fiction.

Once a PhD student accepts this and thinks of their thesis as how to write your dissertation in 15 minutes piece of creative writing with a heavy dose of supporting citations and existing science, things begin to look clearer and more manageable.

Also, this review was written by my partner, whose PhD dissertation I survived, and who turned her dissertation proposal into a finished dissertation in exactly 5 weeks, falling onto this book whenever things got tough. She wishes she had gotten a copy 5 years sooner. The author strives to give the dissertation candidate confidence by offering key strategies that speak to diligence. Rather than providing guidance on how to be successful in the individual elements of a dissertation paper, Ms.

Bolker uses her successful and unsuccessful dissertation experience to prompt the applicant to be confident, not scared to be diligent when attacking a dissertation, but she does not offer guidance on how to complete a proposal, do research She is clear that her book title does not suggest 15 minutes a day will suffice for dissertation success, rather explains that the point of the title is that dissertation work must come first each day several hours a day or 5 pages a day.

Her book speaks to structure and priority in the dissertation process basically, the student must write something each day. She is successful in making the reader believe that the task-at-hand is a surmountable one. success is in the writing initial quantity is better than initial quality. The final sections in her book provide guidance on how to publish the completed dissertation. Perhaps if I were at the point of the dissertation phase, I might have better appreciated those "publication" sections, but at my current status, I found those sections to be page fillers hence, my four stars instead of five.

ARG Top Contributor: Pets. Title is mostly a hook not actual advice, how to write your dissertation in 15 minutes. Main idea is to get the job done you need to write every day probably by setting up a page goal every day. That is not to say this isn't a useful book as a pep talk on how to start and keep writing, but it could just as easily be how to write a novel in 15 minutes a day.

Some nuggets, but not super advice. It is an engaging book on a dry subject lots of fun terms for things and how to write your dissertation in 15 minutes of blast from the past including diskettes and CDROM as a luxury item.

Worth reading from the library probably not purchasing. I bought this book out of desperation. It is geared more towards someone who is writing a dissertation that is exploring a topic or making an argument [such as the Humanities]. My dissertation was a qualitative research study with data I had to analyze. TOP REVIEWER VINE VOICE. Good, common sense approach to working through the dissertation process, from selection of topic and advisor to transforming the dissertation into a potential book.

The emphatic call to "just write" and the zero draft were good reminders that the process is more about getting the ideas out and revised than writing the perfect document - especially the first time through. I picked up some good tips and reminders. Good, if getting dated.

This small book really helped me to get my dissertation done and I frequently recommend it to aspiring candidates and others with big writing tasks in front of them, how to write your dissertation in 15 minutes.
